Hope creates possibilities for patients and families impacted by cancer.

Over 600 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer every day. Receiving a diagnosis can be devastating to both the patient and their family, but they don’t have to do it alone. With the lack of funding and limited access to experimental treatments preventing many Canadians from overcoming this disease, you can make a difference.

Why "do it for Her"

Why Do it for Her
Mom_20190823_0002_edited_edited.jpg

My parents spent decades working on their garden. Adding trees, ponds, and pollinator gardens. They were always looking for new ways to continue adding to it. Mother's Day Weekend in 2019 everything changed. That was the weekend my Mother, Karen Kloibhofer, was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. When you find out a loved one has 3 months to live all you want to do is help. Sadly, most of the time all you feel is completely helpless. The only useful act I felt I could complete was ensuring my Mom had as much time as possible in her garden listening to the birds and wind chimes escaping the stress of cancer treatments and hospital visits

Before this, I killed every plant I brought into my house. Maybe it was the pressure to keep up my Parents' and Grandparents' gardens or the short period of time my mom had left to enjoy her home, I'm not sure. Either way, I knew the importance of each rock, flower, and piece of driftwood. Each item added had its own story and every plant had sentiment attached to it, all of which was carefully curated and lovingly cared for over the past 31 years.

Since my Mother’s passing, gardening now helps me navigate my grief. Helping my Dad maintain and continue developing the garden was the only reason to get out of bed sometimes. Hearing him ask, "Do you think your Mother would like this?" was really hard at first. However, as time passed I found myself repeating the phrase each day, especially on the tough ones, "Just do it for Her." This phrase has helped me navigate many difficult situations and helped me continue to push forward when all I wanted to do was hide in my room.

The most unexpected part during all of this was how gardening introduced me to wonderful people, hardworking small businesses, and gardening enthusiasts who not only sell/grow amazing treasures but also foster supportive and inclusive spaces. As well, I discovered many members had similar experiences with either losing loved ones or discovering the joy of gardening because of their loved ones' passion for it. Knowing that I wasn't alone and surrounded by supportive and caring people has been the silver lining in all of this.

This kindness reminded me of my Mother's belief that "any act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." Aptly nicknamed "Kare-bear," my Mother was always the first to offer support, connect you with the right people, and ensure you left with a smile. In creating Do it for Her, I hope to carry on her legacy and pay forward the kindness and support given to my family. To ensure the event remains inclusive and has the greatest impact, Do it for Her will simultaneously fundraise for multiple charities, showcase small and emerging businesses, and provide a "donate what you can policy" in lieu of vendor/entrance fees.

In the end, I hope Do it for Her becomes a giant love letter to the community and more than anything to my Mother. I am forever grateful to her for teaching me the importance of showing gratitude through actions not just words.
