Do it for Her - Backstory

I moved back to London, Ontario in May 2019 when my mother was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. The only thing I felt I could do was to make sure my Parents’ and Grandparents’ gardens were beautiful places for them to escape to and I worked hard to give them that sanctuary.

Since my Mother’s passing, gardening has brought me a new sense of purpose and community filled with extremely kind and welcoming people. Hell we all know how demanding plants can be, they make sure you get out of bed each day!

When I first became interested in this hobby I felt lost not knowing where to look or how to find the beautiful rare plants my mother and I had fallen head over heels for. After countless searches and reaching out to the local greenhouses.I found many wonderful companies and small businesses that supply rare and native plants. They work very hard to build a supportive environment while sharing knowledge on how to become a more proficient gardener.

In creating Do it for Her - Botanical & Artisan Expo we can bring together a wide variety of people to share in the joy of horticulture, support local businesses, and give back to those in need and those with big dreams for the future.

My mother always pushed the need to live a life of service. She always pushed the notion that "any act of kindness, no matter how small, is never wasted." Creating Do it for Her has allowed me to carry on my mother's legacy and create a giant love letter to this city I call home.

So finally, explaining why the Civic Garden Complex. Well other than the fact that it is an amazing greenhouse and really provides the perfect environment for this event -  I chose the Civic Garden Complex because my Parents were married in these gardens 40 years ago and the Civic Garden Complex is where we celebrated my Mother’s life when she passed away. It has been such a major part of my life and I would love to make it an important part of other people’s lives too.

What's exciting for the next Do it for Her events...well you will have to keep an eye out on our Instagram account! Big things are coming and it's all because of your support. So thank you, this was just a harebrained idea, but you helped make it a reality.

London Heal Sciences Foundation

London Health Sciences Foundation - Cancer Care

Hope creates possibilities for patients and families impacted by cancer.

Over 600 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer every day. Receiving a diagnosis can be devastating to both the patient and their family, but they don’t have to do it alone. With the lack of funding and limited access to experimental treatments preventing many Canadians from overcoming this disease, you can make a difference.

Fanshawe College - Karen Kloibhofer Tools of the Trade Award

So much goes into making a great skilled tradesperson, time, passion, commitment, trust, confidence, and last but not least money. You need money to live, to go to school, to get other certifications, and to purchase the tools of your trade that are right for you.

That is why Karen wanted to create this award. She wanted each student in a skilled trade or apprenticeship program to have the opportunity to apply for an award that will help them become the best craftsperson in their chosen field that they can be.
